Facts on Wormeries
Installing a wormery in school is a practical, physical manifestation of Sustainable Development in action.
By addressing the solid waste issue, composting provides a way of instilling in children a sense of environmental stewardship. Many educational programmes focus on reducing, reusing and recycling our solid waste. Composting takes this a step further as the pupils can participate themselves in the whole process and by using the end product (vermicompost), is a excellent example of the 'closing the loop' philosophy. It is a practical manifestation of sustainable development in action at a grass roots level.
The wormery that would be provided to schools:
The wormery measures 64cm high (of which the leg is 18cm), 64cm deep and 90cm tall. It is one of the most advanced and environmentally sound systems on the market to-day. Whilst being one of the most advanced, it is also one of the simplest worm waste disposal units available. No large heavy trays to lift, no sweating plastic, no more labour intensive and time consuming methods of harvesting the vermicompost; just a few simple pushes and pulls of the breaker bar. The unit is made from timber harvested from European woods, from well managed and sustainable forests.
In the secure area of our web site for registered users we have a host of photos of the self build of wormery, and include evidence of newly hatched worms as well as compost which has already been created from waste in wormery.
