Lesson PlansThe benefits of the proposal from The Learning Worm web site and wormery.

Whether you want to hear it or not, the earth is in a mess. Mankind is largely responsible for this. We need to do something about this, and we need to do it now.

Society has been negligent over the past centuries in caring for our planet.

Only now are we beginning to hear about the ozone layer, carbon footprints, and the need to reuse, repair, reduce, and recycle.

There are numerous governments around the world making lots of noise about all of these issues, but many are paying only lip service to the problems we face.

Where do we begin to heighten people’s awareness, in a positive, interesting, creating and exciting way? In our schools!

If we can educate to-day’s learners, we can attempt to reverse the damage caused by so many predecessors.

Teaching Sustainable Development is increasing compulsory within education. Schools need a policy. Schools are being inspected on this policy.

Where are the resources? Where is there time in the timetable to teach it?

At www.thelearningworm.com, we’ve packaged a plethora of teaching ideas together across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Every single teaching idea is cross curricular; Maths/Sustainable Development, D&T/Sustainable Development, ICT/Sustainable Development, as well as in Language, Science, Music, History, Geography etc. The tool bar on the web site allows individual year group teachers to browse subject specific ideas across say, Year 2, as well as providing access to a subject co-ordinator across all lessons in say, Maths.

With the addition of a large outdoor wormery, children will be responsible for managing their own recycling programme, first hand, and hands on. They’ll even be able to use to compost at the end to grow their own produce! The wormery comes with step-by-step build instructions, for the children to undertake.

The web site includes FAQs, a BLOG, a host of interesting facts on waste, worms and wormeries, and a contact point.

It’s a unique offering to the educational community, and has already received great applause from co-ordinators of Eco Schools, Healthy Schools, LEA Heads of Sustainable Development and Council Environmental Co-ordinators.

We hope you will also be enthused by the opportunity to make a difference.
